This week at Little Squirrels, we continued embracing all things spring, and flowers were the star of the show! The kids were fully immersed in seasonal fun, with plenty of opportunities to create, explore, and engage their senses.

A Flower Shop Twist

One of the highlights of the week was the simple addition of a colander to our flower shop play area. This simple tool provided a whole new way for the kids to arrange their bouquets, threading flower stems through the holes. It quickly became an all-week-long fine motor favorite, encouraging creativity, coordination, and persistence.

Books That Brought Spring to Life

We enjoyed a beautiful selection of spring-themed books, each one sparking conversation and curiosity:

Spring Stinks by Ryan T. Higgins

A hilarious tale featuring Bruce the bear, who is not impressed by the sights and smells of spring, unlike his enthusiastic friend, Ruth the bunny.

Spring in the Forest by Rusty Finch

A sweet lift-the-flap board book that introduces little ones to the animals and plants of the forest in springtime.

I See Spring by Charles Ghigna

A gentle, rhyming book that captures the magic of spring through the eyes of a child, with vibrant illustrations and simple text.

First Notes of Spring by Jessica Kulekjian

A musical celebration of the season’s arrival, following a bear who embraces her unique voice to welcome spring.

Process Over Product: Flower Stamping Art

We explored process art this week with a flower stamping project. The kids dipped real flowers into paint and stamped them onto paper. While the results didn’t look quite like the neat flower prints I imagined, the experience was full of joy, experimentation, and sensory exploration.

Process art focuses on the act of creating rather than the final result. It encourages creativity, decision-making, and open-ended thinking skills that are so important for young learners. The beauty of process art is watching how each child engages with materials in their own way.

New Materials, New Excitement

We received a few wonderful gifts from our wishlist, thank you! The kids were especially excited about the new watercolor paints and spent the week painting some truly lovely flower-themed pictures.

We also added new playdough scissors to our tray, giving little hands more chances to practice cutting and build fine motor strength.

Petal Picking (and Gluing!)

Another fun activity involved real flowers, which the kids carefully deconstructed by picking off petals. Originally, it was simply a sensory and fine motor exploration, but in true child-led fashion, they asked for glue, and we ended up with some unique and spontaneous floral art. I love following the children’s lead and letting their creativity guide the day.

It was a week full of springtime discovery and joy. Next week, we’ll be adding a touch of Easter fun into the mix. Stay tuned for more seasonal adventures!

Warmly,

Ms Sarah

May the world be filled with beautiful, peaceful little children.
